Our worship is different than many Bible believing churches. Many would say that our worship is ‘traditional'. And yet, we include music from a variety of styles, including the most contemporary. Our desire is to have worship that is historic and God-centered, and which takes into account the contemporary context in which we now live.
God-centered and historic worship
Worship is one of the most important activities we perform as Christians. It is for worship that God has created us. And since we are his because ‘He first loved us', we at Hope Presbyterian Church want our worship to be an expression of our love directed back towards him. Consequently, there is an audience of one witnessing our worship: God. He is the only one whom we should be concerned to please.
Our desire, therefore, is that our worship be God-centered. We are not trendy (though we are not opposed to what is new). Our worship will borrow heavily from the wisdom of the past, not to cut ourselves off from the present, but in order to stand on the shoulders of others whose Biblical knowledge and zeal for God exceeds our own. We are hesitant to alter worship in order to follow a fad or entertain a personal notion. And yet, we will sing new songs, and are not afraid of a variety of instrumentation. We have used strings, percussion, and guitars as well as piano and organ.
We want to worship God with a language that is intelligible to contemporary people and yet exalting to God. We hope that those who worship here sense that God is here, that God is honored, and that God is revered.
And we want our worship to be a place where those who are not Christians can come and consider who God is and what he expects of them. Those with questions are welcome. We are not a people who have all the answers.
Worship as families
A distinctive of our worship is that we encourage families to worship together. If you visit, you will notice that many children of a very young age are sitting in worship with their families. This is by design, and we encourage it. Both teens and tots are encouraged to sit with their parents. However, not all children are used to this, of course, so many of our families take advantage of our loving nursery.
Worship in small groups
Worship is not restricted to our large group meetings. We find that worship in small groups provides an intimacy of worship not available in the larger more anonymous setting. We have a number of small groups meeting to which we would be happy to direct you.
